Electricity consumption in Finland decreased last year by just over two percent compared to 2022, according to a statement by Finnish Energy, the trade association representing the energy sector.
This drop was driven in particular by the levels of electricity consumption used in Finnish industry, which were down by six percent last year compared to the year before.
Energy consumption in the forestry sector, for example, fell by eight percent in 2023 compared to 2022's levels.
While consumption dropped, electricity production in Finland increased by 13 percent last year due to the further development of the nation's wind power sector as well as the long-awaited completion of the Olkiluoto 3 nuclear power plant.
The report by Finnish Energy noted that wind power generation was up 25 percent last year, while the production of nuclear power grew by 35 percent.
The increased production levels meant that Finland's need to import electricity decreased significantly during 2023, with net imports accounting for just 2.2 percent of the nation's electricity consumption.
