Eastern Uusimaa District Court has handed the deputy mayor of Helsinki, Paavo Arhinmäki (Left), day fines of just over 2,500 euros for vandalism, for his involvement in a graffiti incident last summer.

Security guards caught Arhinmäki and another man spray painting graffiti on the walls of a train underpass in eastern Helsinki on Midsummer Eve.

The politician issued a public apology soon after the incident and vowed to pay eventual fines.

The court handed Arhinmäki and the other defendant 20-day fines each. For the deputy mayor, the fine amounted to 2,520 euros.

The prosecutor said the Transport Infrastructure Agency spent nearly 3,000 euros cleaning up the graffiti.
