People in Finland returned a record amount of recyclable bottles and cans than ever before, according to non-profit recycling firm Palpa.

People across the country returned around 2.2 billion cash-deposit beverage containers last year, which was an all-time high, and 39 million more containers than in 2022.

The most common types of returnable containers were aluminium cans (1.4 billion), while around 662 million plastic bottles and 125 million glass containers returned in 2023 Palpa reported in a press release.

Regionally, people in Lapland returned the most bottles, in terms of its population size, with each person in the region returning 527 beverage containers last year.

People in that region returned bottles and cans most diligently, a situation that Palpa attributed to its bustling tourism industry.

The next-most diligent recyclers of cash deposit bottles and cans were in the regions of South Savo and Southern Karelia.

At the same time, deposit-carrying containers were returned the least on the semi-autonomous islands of Åland, where each resident returned a total of 298 bottles and cans last year.
