A poll published on Tuesday by news group Uutissuomalainen suggests that National Coalition Party (NCP) candidate Alexander Stubb is on course to become Finland's next president.

Stubb's lead in the second round run-off over his rival Pekka Haavisto now stands at 53-47.

The result is roughly in line with a similar survey published by Helsingin Sanomat on Monday, which found 54 percent support for Stubb and 46 percent for Haavisto.

However, both polls show that the gap between the two candidates is narrowing — as Helsingin Sanomat's previous poll gave Stubb a lead of 14 percentage points.

The Uutissuomalainen survey was carried out between 30 January and 5 February and asked 1,000 Finnish citizens for their preferred candidate in the second round, with 822 people stating their preference.

The All Points North podcast this week asks what differentiates the two candidates vying to become Finland's next president. Listen to the episode via this embedded player, on Yle Areena, via Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.

Advance voting turnout could set new record

Tuesday marks the seventh and final day of advance voting in the second round of Finland's presidential election.

Turnout hit 40 percent at 11 o'clock on Tuesday morning, and if the current pace continues, a new advance voting record could be set by the time polling stations close at 8pm on Tuesday evening.

The pace of advance voting has even outstripped that of the first round, which reached 35.9 percent by the morning of the final day.

The Ministry of Justice later revealed that the advance voting turnout for the first round was 44.7 percent.
