Birds' spring migration is underway despite the return of winter weather, reports the ornithological group Birdlife Finland.

Southern and central areas of Finland got a good deal of snow ahead of the weekend.

One tool that is aiding in monitoring the bird migration this spring is an application (Muuttolintujen kevät in Finnish or 'Migratory Bird Spring') developed by the University of Jyväskylä.

The app can now identify 250 species, up from 150 last year, according to Otso Ovaskainen, an ecological data expert at the university.

So far, the free app has been downloaded some 200,000 times.

Earlier this week BirdLife Finland said thousands of migratory birds were seen flying south from the Finnish coast because of chilly, snowy conditions.
