Police reveal Pirkanmaa shooting victim details

After shooting and seriously wounding a female in her early 30s, the suspect fled the scene in a car, according to the NBI.

Authorities released more details about incidents that led to an exchange of gunfire and police fatally shooting a man on Tuesday in the region of Pirkanmaa.

Police were alerted about a violent crime in the small municipality of Juupajoki at around 10:30 am.

According to police, a male suspect had shot and seriously wounded a female in her early 30s. Authorities said that the suspected shooter and victim knew each other.

By the time police arrived, the suspect had already left the scene, according to a National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) press release issued late on Tuesday.

The suspect fled the scene in a car, according to police, who said that about two hours later officers caught up with the suspect and managed to stop his vehicle with a spiked mat on route 66 in the municipality of Ruovesi.

During the operation, police shut down the route between Ruovesi and Juupajoki.

According to the NBI, after the vehicle had come to a stop, the suspect fired several shots at police, who said they "also had to use a weapon in the situation". The suspect died from his injuries.

According to information obtained by Yle, the suspect had an extensive criminal record. He had been involved in two police standoffs and had a history of violent crime.

The NBI said that officers were not injured in the situation on Tuesday.

The law enforcement agency said that the incidents were being investigated as cases of suspected attempted murder, attempted manslaughter, traffic endangerment and firearms offences, among others.
