Finnish police have started up a new unit dedicated to fighting online scammers. The unit will work on a trial basis until the end of next year, police announced in a press release.
Online fraud has increased dramatically in recent years, and investigations are hampered by the disparate nature of the crime, according to the statement.
Earlier this year Finland's Tax Administration warned people not to fall for a scam targeting credit card information, and banks are regularly forced to issue similar warnings.
In total, some 44 million euros was lost to digital scammers in 2023. Police say investigating those crimes is complex.
Criminal reports are made to police in one location, or several locations, with scammers located in another.
The new unit will investigate such scams on a national basis, clarifying responsibility and making investigations more efficient.
