UNICEF Finland has confirmed Suzanne Innes-Stubb, the spouse of Finnish President Alexander Stubb, as the new patron of the Finnish branch of the UN agency responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide.

In a press release announcing her appointment, Innes-Stubb said she wants to use the role to help make children's voices heard, "especially amid the turbulence of today's world".

"I hope to play my part in raising their voices, because the future of societies depends on a good childhood. I accept the task with honour," she said.

Innes-Stubb will also chair the selection committee that chooses the winner of the 'Children's Rights Influencer' award, handed out annually to a person or organisation for making a significant contribution to the rights of the child.

The role as Finland's UNICEF patron is traditionally held by the president's spouse since the Finnish branch was founded in 1967. Sylvi Kekkonen — wife of Finland's five-time president Urho Kekkonen — was the first patron to be appointed to the role.
