Finnish fighter jets in Romania respond to Russian drones near border

Finnish aircraft and personnel are in Romania as part of a joint Nato air policing mission with the British Royal Air Force.

The Romanian Ministry of Defence informs that F-18 Hornet fighter jets of the Finnish Air Force took off late Wednesday night.

The Hornets launched due to Russian drones at half past one in the morning local time. Russia uses Iranian-made Shahed drones. The Romanian Defence Ministry said in a statement on Thursday that parts of Shahed drones were found in the morning near the Romanian border with Ukraine, while the Ukrainian army said on Thursday morning that Russian forces sent about 40 drones towards Ukraine last night.

Most of the drones were intercepted, but some disappeared. Romanian Foreign Minister Luminita Odobescu said Romania "strongly condemns Russia's irresponsible actions".

The defence alliance Nato said that no evidence of deliberate Russian action had been found in Romania. However, Nato branded the Russian attack as irresponsible and dangerous.
