The number of Covid-19 infections is expected to increase as the new school year begins. This is due to the fact the disease is more easily transmitted in large numbers of people.

"There will be more infections towards autumn and winter," Aino Nyqvist, an infectious disease doctor at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), told Yle.

"It is now starting to follow the usual seasonal pattern for respiratory infections, with more cases in winter and fewer in summer. We don't know for sure yet in which months the peak will be," says Nyqvist.

Covid is currently treated like seasonal influenza, with no special precautions needed.

"We are no longer testing for coronavirus actively, but a recent sewage surveys show a slight increase in infections during the summer. There has also been an increase in laboratory-confirmed corona infections," said Nyqvist.
