Yle has learned that the commander of the Coast Guard in the Gulf of Finland, Risto Jääskeläinen, has been removed from his post and is subject to a criminal investigation over suspected service crimes.
Jääskeläinen has left the service, and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has started a criminal investigation.
According to Yle's information, the crimes came to the Border Guard's attention on 22 July. He resigned from the service himself the next day.
Yle is naming Jääskeläinen at this early stage in the probe because of his public position and the significant role he held.
Service crimes are subject to a maximum prison sentence of one year. The NBI declined to tell Yle of any other crimes Jääskeläinen might be suspected of.
Jääskeläinen has served as Commander of the Coast Guard in the Gulf of Finland since 2020. Before that he had commanded the air patrol squadron in the same region.
In 2018 he was awarded the Lion of Finland medal by President Sauli Niinistö.
