Left Alliance MP Minja Koskela has announced her intention to run for the party's leadership position, made vacant by Li Andersson's election to the European Parliament earlier this year.
Koskela revealed her plans in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Friday.
"At a time when the right-wing government is destroying nature, the climate, workers' rights and the everyday lives of low-income earners, a strong left is needed," Koskela wrote.
Her party colleague MP Veronika Honkasalo, who was also thought to be interested in replacing Andersson, announced in a post on Facebook that she will not join the leadership race.
Another possible candidate for party leader, Turku MP Timo Furuholm, recently revealed in a press release that he does not intend to stand either.
With Honkasalo and Furuholm out of the frame, Koskela is unlikely to face serious competition for the position of Left Alliance party chair.
Before entering politics, Koskela worked as a music teacher for five years, played violin and piano for the Lahti Conservatory orchestra, and has also authored or co-authored three non-fiction books.
She was elected to Helsinki City Council following the municipal elections of 2021, and secured a seat in the Finnish Parliament at the elections last year.
