The Kainuu Border Guard reported on Friday it apprehended a person in Kuhmo suspected of illegally crossing the border from Russia into Finland.

Border Guard patrols apprehended the person in the morning near the border. The person had crossed the border by land and, according to the Border Guard, has applied for asylum in Finland.

The Border Guard has opened a preliminary investigation into the case.

Personnel from the Kainuu Border Guard have been in contact with their counterparts in the Kalevala region of Russia's Republic of Karelia.

Earlier this summer, Parliament approved amendments to the Border Act, which allow the Finnish Border Guard to refuse to accept asylum applications under certain circumstances.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) said earlier this month that the border between Russia and Finland would likely remain closed for the foreseeable future.
