Police reported on Friday morning that a woman who was shot in downtown Tampere on Thursday evening had died. The man suspected of the shooting has been detained and is being investigated on a charge of manslaughter. He is expected to be formally placed under arrest on Monday.
The shooting occurred shortly before 8pm on Hämeenkatu in the centre of the city. The suspect fired several shots before fleeing the scene, according to police.
The woman was accompanied at the time by a minor child who was not injured in the incident, police added.
Authorities confirm that the suspected perpetrator and victim knew each other. Yle has learned that both were members of the Romani community and in their mid-30s.
The police are investigating the incident as suspected manslaughter, a firearms offence, as well as endangering public safety. The suspect has a long record of violent crime.
The police apprehended him around 12:30am on Friday in Ylöjärvi, northwest of Tampere. Multiple patrols were involved in the arrest. They said that the suspect resisted being taken into custody, but gave no further details.
This was the second shooting in central Tampere in less than a week. Police say that on 6 September, another man in his 30s fired several shots into the ground in Koskipuisto park during an argument with another individual. This suspect has also been detained.
