Nearly a tenth of small and medium-sized (SME) business owners report witnessing corruption, according to a fresh survey by the Federation of Finnish Enterprises (Suomen Yrittäjät).

Entrepreneurs in the construction sector employing more than ten people have faced the most corruption, characterised as the misuse of power for personal gain, according to the lobby for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The poll also found regional differences in perceived corruption, with the highest levels reported by entrepreneurs operating in the capital region and in northern Finland.

Nearly 1,200 representatives from micro, small and medium-sized companies responded to the survey conducted in late September and early October.

Finland was ranked second in the latest Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) compiled by the non-profit NGO Transparency International.
