Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen (NCP) says Israeli airstrikes on Iran were justified under international law as they targeted military sites.

Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen (NCP) on Saturday said she believed Israel was justified under international law in carrying out the strikes on Iran, as they were reportedly directed at military targets.

Israel's retaliatory strike on military sites in Iran early Saturday was in response to Iranian attacks earlier this month.

Finland has for months been calling for a stop to military escalation in the region, according to Valtonen.

"I personally don't believe that killing individual leaders of terrorist organisations will resolve this situation. We are calling on all parties to return to diplomatic means," Valtonen told Yle on Saturday.

Finland's position, according to Valtonen, is to support the international court system, which provides independent investigators on the ground to assess strikes, their impact on civilians and any potential war crimes.

"When the investigation is concluded, and particularly when the International Court of Justice (ICJ) or the International Criminal Court (ICC) delivers its verdict, Finland will naturally support it," she added.
