The relatively mild autumn weather will take a wintry turn before the end of this week, according to Yle meteorologist Elias Paakkanen, with strong winds, sleet and even snow showers in the forecast.
"Today [Tuesday] is still calm, but then things will start to happen," Paakkanen said.
A low pressure front is expected to move into Finland from the northwest on Tuesday evening, bringing up to 5–10 centimetres of snow to some parts of Finnish Lapland.
The front will move into eastern and central parts of the country on Wednesday, bringing rain showers and sleet to some parts. The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has issued a warning of hazardous driving conditions in northern parts of Finland for Tuesday evening and into Wednesday.
The rest of the country should be prepared for strong winds on Wednesday, Paakkanen added.
"Wind gusts can exceed 15 metres per second, in some places up to 20 metres per second. It will be very stormy all over the country," he said.
Snowfall expected on Thursday
As one low-pressure front moves away by late on Wednesday evening, another is set to arrive — this time hitting the southern part of the country on Thursday.
Rain showers, sleet and even snow are expected in southern, eastern and central areas on Thursday, with the FMI issuing a separate warning about hazardous driving conditions for these regions from 4pm on Thursday.
"There is a high probability that the first snow will fall in central parts of the country. Eastern Finland may see a lot of snow, up to 15 centimetres," Paakkanen said, further noting that driving conditions will continue to be difficult on Friday.
"If you are thinking about changing your winter tyres, keep a close eye on the weather forecasts on a daily basis," he said.
