A two-hour work stoppage by some ground staff workers at Helsinki airport on Monday afternoon has led to a number of flight cancellations and delays.

The action, involving members of the Finnish Aviation Union (IAU), began at 2pm and scheduled to end at 4:15pm.

The union represents airport employees working in aviation technology and service functions, including roles in aircraft maintenance, catering and security.

Flag carrier Finnair said the "illegal walk-out" could have a significant impact on flights throughout Monday afternoon and evening, according to a press release.

By 3pm, about an hour after the walkout began, at least 17 flights had been cancelled and many more were facing delays of up to two hours.

Finnair's Communications Manager Suvi Aaltonen advised passengers to follow the airline's communications and social media channels. The company will also contact passengers directly to inform them about flight cancellations and changes, she added.

According to Yle's information, the walkout was called because of Finnair's plans to fire two employees over their alleged disclosure of critical safety information.

A company hearing into the allegations was set to begin at 2pm, with the union calling for the protest to start at the same time.

In the union's view, there are no grounds for the two employees to be dismissed.
