Finnish MP Krista Kiuru of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) was assaulted in Helsinki's Kaisaniemi Park early on Friday evening.
According to a police statement, the emergency response centre received a call at 4:19pm reporting an assault. The victim, later confirmed to be Kiuru, reported that an unidentified man had struck her in the face before fleeing the scene.
Police suspect a 34-year-old man in the case. The suspect was apprehended by police in Vantaa around midday Saturday. The police will continue to investigate the case and determine whether the act was politically motivated.
The Social Democratic Party clarified in a press release that the incident occurred while Kiuru was en route from parliament to pick up her child from daycare. A middle-aged man approached her and, without warning, punched her in the face before fleeing without explanation.
Kiuru sought medical attention at an accident and emergency centre following the incident. Later on Friday evening, she addressed the attack in a post on her Facebook page.
"A stranger suddenly struck me in the face today while I was on my way from parliament to collect my child. I reported the incident to Helsinki police and the parliament's security authorities," Kiuru wrote. "Now I am at home. Thank you to everyone for your concern and support."
Kiuru, who chairs parliament's Social Affairs and Health Committee and served as the health Minister in the previous government, has been in the public eye recently due to contentious debates surrounding the current government's proposed hospital network reforms.
Politicians condemn the attack
Political leaders across Finland swiftly condemned the assault. Tytti Tuppurainen, chair of the SDP's parliamentary group, denounced the violence, describing it as potentially politically motivated.
"We demand that Finnish society unite against this phenomenon," Tuppurainen told Yle, adding that Kiuru is a well-known figure in Finland.
"At this stage, there's no reason to suspect anything other than that this attack was related to her position as a political decision-maker."
Tuppurainen called for a broader societal discussion about political violence in Finland, emphasising the need for cooperation among all parties to tackle such incidents.
SDP Chair Antti Lindtman expressed relief that Kiuru was recovering but described the attack as "cowardly" in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
"This attack is beyond comprehension, and political violence must be condemned in the strongest possible terms," he wrote.
President Alexander Stubb and Finance Minister Riikka Purra (Finns) also condemned the attack, calling it unacceptable in a civilised society.
Past political violence in Finland
The assault on Kiuru is the latest in a series of violent incidents targeting Finnish politicians.
In 2023, National Coalition MP Ben Zyskowicz was attacked at Helsinki's Itäkeskus metro station. Two years earlier, former Prime Minister Juha Sipilä was assaulted outside parliament.
Sebastian Tynkkynen, now an MEP for the Finns Party, was assaulted in Lahti in 2021, while President Alexander Stubb's house was attacked by a vandals in 2015 during his tenure as Finance Minister.
The incident has reignited calls for improved security measures and a societal crackdown on violence against public figures.
