Authorities in Finland suspect that a group has smuggled nearly 100 kilograms of cannabis into the country, according to Finnish Customs.

In October, a man carrying a suitcase upon arrival to Helsinki Airport from Bangkok caught the attention of the agency's officers.

Its analysis and intelligence unit began surveilling the man, following him to Espoo, where he met with another man, Customs said in a press release.

After a search of the suitcase uncovered 13 kilograms of cannabis, both men were detained.

The agency said that development sparked an extensive investigation revealing a group they suspect smuggled nearly 100 kilograms of the illegal drug to Finland.

According to Customs, officers also searched a warehouse in Espoo, where they found 60kg of cannabis hidden in biscuit boxes.

Customs suspects that an additional 30kg of the drug had also been stored at the facility.

Finnish Customs has arrested three people suspected of a number of serious drug offences. None of the suspects live in Finland, according to the agency.

Authorities have concluded a preliminary investigation of the case and handed a report over to the prosecutor for consideration of charges.

According to Finnish Customs, seizures of cannabis could be at a record-breaking high this year, as the agency has already seized around 830kg of the drug during the first nine months of this year.

That is nearly twice the amount the agency seized in all of 2023, it said.
