Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen (NCP) met her Danish counterpart Lars Løkke Rasmussen in Katajanokka, Helsinki on Wednesday.

"The Finnish position is very clear. First of all, no aggression should be awarded," Valtonen said at a joint press conference at the end of the meeting, where they discussed issues such as Russia's hybrid attacks and peace negotiations in Ukraine.

"Ukraine has the right to its full sovereignty and territorial integrity," Valtonen said, adding that Finland has the right to keep supporting Ukraine

According to Valtonen, the Nordic countries will ramp up their cooperation. In difficult times, Valtonen said, close cooperation between Finland and Denmark is even more valuable than before.

Danish Foreign Minister Rasmussen also stressed the importance of cooperation in difficult times. According to Rasmussen, relations between Finland and Denmark are excellent.

He said that the Nordic countries are pinning a lot of hopes on Thursday's EU summit, when EU leaders will meet in Brussels to find a path towards peace in Ukraine.

Lasting peace needed

"It is of crucial importance that Europe now delivers," Rasmussen said.

Both foreign ministers said that a lasting peace is needed in Ukraine.

"Security guarantees must be credible, and Russia must not be rewarded for aggression. And we are ready to engage," Rasmussen said.

In response to President Donald Trump's statement in a speech to Congress that the US "will get Greenland one way or another", Rasmussen said he does not believe that the Greenlanders want to become part of the United States.

According to Rasmussen, the key point of Trump's speech was that he promised to support Greenland's right to decide its future. The foreign minister said he was optimistic about what Greenlanders will decide on the issue.
