The number of firms applying for bankruptcy in Finland is at its highest level since the late 1990s, according to figures published on Friday by Statistics Finland.

The agency's report also revealed that the number of bankruptcies has increased for the fourth consecutive year.

"There were 3,633 bankruptcy applications in the past 12 months, which is the highest number since August 1997," Statistics Finland's Chief Actuary Mira Kuussaari said in a press release.

This figure represents a nine percent increase on the previous 12-month period.

Last month, a total of 350 companies went to the wall, which is a roughly 20 percent increase on the same month last year — and follows a pattern which has seen the number of bankruptcy applications rise steadily since January 2021.

Firms operating in the service, construction or trade sectors were mostly likely to apply for bankruptcy last month, Statistics Finland's report noted.
