State railway firm VR is cancelling night trains from Tampere and replacing weekend daytime services with buses between 26 April and 1 June due to a bridge renovation in the city centre.
A major, multi-year overhaul of Tampere's passenger railway station area has begun, with a key part of the project being the replacement of the Erkkilä bridge, which crosses over the railway tracks downtown.
The first changes will take effect this weekend.
Weekend day trains on the Seinäjoki, Pori and Parkano routes from Tampere will be replaced by buses.
Replacement buses for Tampere-Parkano and Tampere-Pori begin this Saturday, while Seinäjoki-Tampere buses start the first weekend of May.
Changes in night train and car-carriers
Track work in central Tampere will also impact night train schedules.
All Saturday-night train departures will be cancelled throughout May. Instead, VR will operate the northbound night train 276 from Kolari to Helsinki on Sundays during the month.
More detailed, route-specific information is available on VR’s website.
The renovation will also impact car-carrier train services from Tampere. From 16 June to 13 December, cars cannot be loaded onto trains in Tampere. Passengers travelling with a car must instead drive to Pasila in Helsinki or Turku.
The construction work at Tampere’s central rail yard is expected to last around five years.
