Finland saw above-average temperatures during the month of April, according to figures released on Friday by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), but last month was exceptionally warm along the southern and western coasts.

April tends to bring significant fluctuations in temperatures and weather conditions, especially between southern and northern parts of the country, and this year was no different.

The highest temperature of the month was recorded in the west coast city of Rauma on 16 April, when the mercury climbed to 22.9 degrees Celsius.

At the other end of the scale, April's lowest temperature was registered in the northwestern municipality of Kilpisjärvi, in Finnish Lapland, where a reading of -23.8 degrees Celsius was recorded on the morning of 11 April.

Overall, temperatures were 1-2 degrees warmer last month than the 1991–2020 average, although eastern and northern parts were below the average.

FMI's report further noted that there was more sunshine than usual during April compared to the long-term average, but southern areas as well as Finnish Lapland saw more rainfall than normal for this time of year.
