Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen (NCP) on Sunday called Russia's most recent drone attacks on Ukraine "devastating". Posting on messaging service X, Valtonen said Russia is using drones and missiles to target civilians.
Saturday's overnight strikes killed at least 12 people, according to Ukrainian officials.
Valtonen urged Russia to stop the war and support a ceasefire.
Ukraine's Air Force said Russian forces launched nearly 300 drones and 70 missiles on Saturday night. According to Ukrainian officials, this was one of the highest numbers of drones and missiles launched in a single night since the start of the war.
Retired general and current MEP Pekka Toveri said Russian President Vladimir Putin has no genuine intention to pursue peace negotiations in the ongoing war against Ukraine.
One of the key reasons for this, according to Toveri, is that Putin no longer fears US President Donald Trump, and perceives the West as weak.
"When Putin spoke with Trump over the phone, Trump reportedly assured him that no further sanctions would be imposed," Toveri said.
Toveri said he believes that Putin is convinced he can still win the war this year. A peace deal is also unappealing to the Russian leader because it would be difficult to portray the end of the war as a victory to the Russian people, especially when the country's armed forces have been severely depleted and its economy is struggling.
According to Pekka Toveri, now more than ever, it is time for Europe to demonstrate its resolve by amping up sanctions on Moscow.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, also posting on X on Sunday, called for strong international pressure on Russia to stop the war.
