Finland's Ministry for Foreign Affairs has summoned Russia's ambassador to Finland Pavel Kuznetsov for questioning over suspicions that two Russian military aircraft violated Finnish airspace on Friday.

The decision to summon the Russian diplomat was first reported by tabloid Iltalehti, and it was later confirmed to Yle by a spokesperson for the foreign ministry.

Finnish authorities believe the two Russian planes entered Finnish airspace near the city of Porvoo, in the first such incident since February.

"We take the suspected airspace violation seriously, and an investigation is underway," Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen (NCP) said on Friday.

Yle understands that Finland also intends to formally request an explanation from Russia for the violation.

The Gulf of Finland Coast Guard has also launched a preliminary investigation into the incident.
