Routine annual maintenance has begun at Finland's Olkiluoto 2 (OL2) nuclear power plant, with electricity production halted for the duration of the service.

The scheduled outage is expected to last three weeks, with operations due to resume on 15 June, according to operator Teollisuuden Voima (TVO).

During the maintenance period, technicians will replace uranium fuel, carry out fault repairs and conduct a series of tests and inspections.

Olkiluoto 2, located in Eurajoki on Finland's west coast, has faced repeated disruptions in recent months.

Last autumn, a fault was discovered in the unit's generator, forcing a weeks-long shutdown followed by reduced power output.

More recently, in April and May, electricity production at the reactor was suspended entirely for several weeks due to a rotor fault in the generator.

Maintenance at Olkiluoto's first and third reactors was carried out earlier in the spring. Together, the three reactors at the Olkiluoto nuclear facility produce nearly one-third of Finland's electricity consumption.
