Western Uusimaa District Court has sentenced a 20-year-old man to §11 years in prison after finding him guilty of a robbery-related murder late last year.

The court found Güzel Dijar guilty of murder, aggravated robbery and a firearms offence.

The deadly shooting took place on 5 December 2024 in the Suvela neighbourhood of Espoo. During the trial, the court heard that the defendant had agreed to meet with the victim outside an apartment building in order to sell a weapon.

However, the defendant had planned to rob the victim at the meeting. As Dijar tried to rob the victim, he threatened him with a gun, then pistol-whipped him, before shooting him three times in the lower back, the court said.

The victim was under the age of 20, according to previous reporting.

The court noted that the defendant was likely aware that shooting the victim would result in their death, even though there was no evidence shown that he aimed at the victim's lower back.

After gunning down the victim, the defendant took the 4,000 euros that was going to pay for the illegal gun purchase, the court said.

In addition to the prison term, Dijar was also ordered to pay 10,000 euros to each of the victim's parents and 6,500 to the victim's siblings for the suffering he caused them.

Another defendant who was waiting in a car during the deadly altercation was handed a five-month prison sentence for a firearms offence.

The district court's verdict is not final, meaning the case can still be taken to an appeal court.
