People planning road or rail trips around Finland this summer have been advised to take note of a series of construction and renovation projects that may hamper their travels.
The Espoo City Rail Link project, for example, will have a significant impact on rail traffic between Helsinki and Turku this summer, as two new tracks are built between Leppävaara and Kauklahti.
The work means that train service between Helsinki and Karjaa will be replaced by buses from 23 June to 27 July, and trains will run between Turku and Karjaa less frequently.
There will also be no direct rail connection between Helsinki and Turku during this period.
Elsewhere in the country, buses will replace train services between Rovaniemi and Oulu from Monday to Thursday until the end of September, while buses will also run instead of trains, on weekends between Kouvola and Joensuu, until the beginning of October.
There is more information on VR's website about the disruptions caused by track work during the summer months and into the autumn, as well as advice for passengers on luggage limits and other considerations when travelling by replacement bus.
Road works could cause delays, diversions
Road works are a common sight across Finland during the summer months, and this year will be no different.
A major maintenance operation on national road 4, which runs through the centre of the country, will lead to delays in some areas — especially around Central Finland — during June and July.
Motorists are also advised to reserve more travel time when driving along national road 6 near Kouvola and on the southern ring road of national road 12 near Lahti.
Meanwhile, renovation and maintenance work will be taking place along a number of minor roads across the country.
In total, more than 3,000 kilometres of roads will be paved this summer, according to the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (Traficom), at around 800 different locations.
On the busiest routes, the summertime work will mostly take place at night or on weekdays.
Traficom also advises motorists to check the Suomen väylät map service before setting out on a journey to see if there are road works along the planned route.
