Police officers across Finland caught 340 drink drivers and 25 intoxicated boaters over the Midsummer long weekend, according to the National Police Board.

A police safety surveillance effort on roads and waterways resulted in breathalyser tests of around 26,000 people between last Thursday and Sunday, the board announced in a press release on Thursday.

The police said speeding continues to risk traffic safety on Finnish roads, noting that 99 drivers were cited with aggravated traffic safety endangerment.

Officers also caught 45 people for intoxication while operating a light electric vehicle, resulting in each of the violators being handed 200-euro fines.

The National Police Board's Chief Superintendent Heikki Ihalainen said now that Finland has unambiguous legislation on light electric vehicles, officers are now better able to monitor their use.

Earlier this month, the Finnish Parliament passed legislation concerning the use of electric scooters and other battery-driven vehicles, as well bicycles.

The new rules went into effect last week. Among other changes, the new law placed a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit of 0.5 g/l for drivers of light electric vehicles.
