More rain coming, but Finland will warm up soon

Temperatures are expected to rise after the rain, which will likely be heaviest in the south-east.

Finland will soon see warmer, sunny weather, but not before more rain arrives, according to Yle's meteorologist, Matti Huutonen.

A major precipitation system coming from the south will reach Finland's southern areas on Tuesday, according to the forecast. Most of the rainfall will be seen in the south and particularly in south-eastern areas, Huutonen said.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has issued a warning for heavy rain in the southeast, with more than 50 mm of rain expected on Tuesday.

However, once that precipitation system moves on, weather conditions are expected to be warm and sunny.

According to Huutonen, temperatures exceeding 25 degrees Celsius — the threshold for 'hot' weather in Finland — are possible over the weekend, but conditions will also make thunderstorms likely then, too.

"The rainfall may be heavy at times in some places, but it doesn't look like there will be any major low-pressure problems," Huutonen explained.

He noted that many areas of Finland have been quite rainy this summer, with rainy conditions seen every other day — or even daily.

The areas that have received most rainfall were in eastern, southeastern and southern parts of the country, with above-average amounts of rain in the south and east.

On the other hand, Huutonen noted that northern areas of Finland, including Lapland, have seen less rainfall this summer — at least so far.
