Finland recorded its hottest temperature of the summer on Sunday, as the heatwave gripping the country continued to intensify.

According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), the new seasonal high was measured in Kaskinen's Sälgrund, where the temperature rose to 31.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday afternoon.

This reading surpassed the previous high of 30.3 degrees, which had been set just a day earlier on Saturday at Joensuu's Linnunlahti weather station.

Earlier on Saturday, the highest reading had briefly been held by Porvoo's Harabacka station with 29.9 degrees.

Other locations where temperatures topped 29 degrees included Hyvinkää, Salo, Vantaa, Liperi, Pyhtää, Mäntsälä, and Virolahti.

Before this weekend, the summer's top reading had been 29.0 degrees, recorded in Jämsä on 15 June.

In Finland, a 'hot day' is defined as one where the temperature exceeds 25 degrees Celsius. The country remains under the influence of a very warm air mass, resulting in widespread heatwave conditions from the south through much of central Finland.

The FMI has issued expanded heat warnings for nearly the entire country, with the hot weather expected to continue into the coming week.

Finland is currently under a mass of very warm air, resulting in widespread heatwave conditions across much of the country.

As the hot air mass lingers, intense thunderstorms have developed over southern Finland during the weekend, FMI said on social media platform X.

The storms are accompanied by frequent lightning and torrential rain. Weather warnings for heavy rain and severe thunderstorms remain in effect for southern and central parts of the country.

Finland's all-time temperature record stands at 37.2 degrees, measured in Liperi at Joensuu Airport in July 2010.
