Two men have drowned in the sea at Yyteri beach, near the city of Pori.

A search and rescue operation was launched on Saturday evening at around 9pm following reports that a rubber dinghy and a SUP board had capsized about 200-300 metres off the shore.

A person on the beach contacted authorities after they heard shouts for help.

Police believe that the group consisted of five people, but three of them managed to safely reach the shore on their own.

The Coast Guard, police and emergency services — including a sea rescue helicopter — arrived at the scene and began searching for the two missing men, with the operation continuing throughout the night.

Southwest Finland Police Department announced that their bodies were found on Sunday morning about 400 metres from the shore of Yyteri beach.

A spokesperson for the Finnish Coast Guard told news agency STT that it is likely the men had already drowned before authorities even arrived at the scene.

Police have launched a preliminary probe into the course of events that led to the two deaths, but Yle understands there is no reason to suspect any crime has been committed in relation to the incident.
