Thursday was hot, but not record-breaking

Another sort of heat record could be broken on Friday. Warm conditions are also expected next week.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) issued a correction on Friday, noting that the summer's heat record had not been broken the previous day.

It had reported the temperature reached 33.1 degrees Celsius at a weather station in Lappeenranta on Thursday afternoon, which would have set a record — but that wasn't the case, it announced on social media.

Instead, the day's highest temperature was measured in South Ostrobothnia's municipality of Ähtäri, where it reached 31.7 degrees, which was not a record-breaking high.

The year's high-temperature record that still stands was seen on 14 July in the Ostrobothnian island town of Kaskinen, where it reached 32.4 degrees.

According to Yle meteorologist Anne Borgström, hot conditions are expected to continue into the weekend.

More heat

Another sort of heat record could be broken on Friday, according to the FMI.

The weather tracking outfit's meteorologist Ville Siiskonen said that if the temperature exceeds 30 degrees somewhere in the country on Friday, it will be the 14th day in a row that has occurred, which would mark the first time Finland has seen that occur in recorded history.

As of Thursday, the situation is comparable to similar conditions seen in the summer of 1972. This kind of weather data has been tracked since 1961.

According to Yle meteorologist Anniina Valtonen, Finland's warmest weather on Friday is expected in southeastern parts of the country, as well as Ostrobothnia, where it could breach the 30-degrees mark.

She said some parts of Finland will likely see temperatures above 30 degrees on Saturday as well.

"But Sunday is a question mark, right now," she explained.

The recent period of extended hot weather has been caused by a stubborn high pressure system.

"This is a slow-moving phenomenon, during which almost nothing happens," Valtonen explained.

However, that system is expected to gradually move eastward towards Russia, while more unstable weather conditions are likely to roll in from the west.

Weekend heat, thunderstorms

Saturday will still be warm, but the anticipated change will likely bring thunderstorms and showers, according to Valtonen.

The day's sunniest conditions will be in central and southern areas, with expected temperatures of around 30 degrees.

Meanwhile, showers and thunderstorms are expected to begin on Saturday in the west, as well as near the eastern border.

A rain and thunderstorm front is expected to expand to other parts of the country on Sunday, while the sunny and windy conditions are anticipated in the southeast.

"In most areas, it would be good to prepare for the possibility of showers," she said, adding that brief precipitation spells can offer a pleasant respite from the heat.

However, temperatures exceeding 30 degrees are not expected on Sunday.

"We shall see," Valtonen said, noting that next week will also be warm.
