Finnish President Alexander Stubb was the only leader of a small European state invited to high-level talks on ending Russia's war in Ukraine – a step experts say marks a significant moment in Finland's diplomatic history.
Stubb stood side-by-side with leaders from major European countries including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni as well as Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
"The world and Finland's foreign policy doctrine have changed a lot, but I would say Stubb has already joined a club for which there are very few comparable examples," said political historian Markku Jokisipilä.
The outcome of the discussions remains uncertain, but scholars argue their significance could extend far beyond Ukraine, shaping Europe's future and global power relations.
Some saw echoes of earlier Finnish diplomacy. Political historian Juhana Aunesluoma compared Stubb's role to former president Martti Ahtisaari's mediation in Kosovo in the late 1990s, which led to a Serbian withdrawal and eventually earned Ahtisaari the Nobel Peace Prize.
Others recalled Sauli Niinistö hosting US President Donald Trump and Russian Vladimir Putin in Helsinki in 2018, or Urho Kekkonen presiding over the 1975 Helsinki Accords.

For veteran diplomat Hannu Himanen, Finland's weight today comes partly from its Nato membership and strong military, but even more from Stubb himself.
"Stubb has clearly succeeded on a personal level in speaking with Trump in a way that appealed to him and created a trusting connection that seems durable and productive," Himanen said.
Sinikukka Saari, a senior researcher on Russian foreign policy, underlined Finland's new orientation.
"In the past Finland reached westward through Russia. Now it reaches directly west," she said.
Stubb's direct link to the US
Aunesluoma added that Stubb's direct link with Washington may give him a unique role.
"At least as a hypothesis, one could say that Stubb has taken on a kind of special messenger's role," he said.
Stubb was praised profusely by Trump during the meeting. The two leaders played a round of golf together in March. Stubb, a former member of the Finnish national golf team, studied at Furman University in South Carolina on a golf scholarship.
Still, experts cautioned against overstating his achievements before the talks conclude.
"It is too early to assess the significance and historical weight of these negotiations. Only history will tell what kind of mark President Stubb leaves," Himanen said.
Jokisipilä also warned that the precise outcome – and Finland's role – remain unknown. But, he added, the stakes could not be higher.
"The outcome of the war in Ukraine and the terms of any peace that follows are of vital importance for Finland, as part of the Western front," he pointed out.
