Finnish President Alexander Stubb has shared his thoughts on the Russian–American peace proposal.
The proposal, he noted, came as a surprise.
Stubb called the proposed 28-point plan to end the Ukraine war both incomplete and contradictory
"We Europeans and our other allies were not informed of the plan in advance, though we did have some sense of its contents," Stubb told Yle.
The plan has been widely viewed as favourable to Russia
Stubb said he had been in contact with the US administration, adding that a couple of messages had also been directed towards President Donald Trump.
"That is why, together with our allies, we have spent the past 48 hours reworking the proposal. We have essentially used it as a baseline, and now we have a clear plan of our own," Stubb explained.
Leaders from European countries, joined by Japan and Canada, held emergency talks on the situation in Ukraine on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Johannesburg this weekend.
Stubb said he was in continuous contact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who took to X on Saturday to thank Finland for its support.
Finland mentioned
Finland is mentioned in a special annex to the peace plan, which came as a surprise, according to Stubb.
He said he suspects it may reflect Finland's strong defence and the high level of trust it enjoys within Nato.
Finland is attending the G20 summit for the first time as a guest. The Trump plan, leaked to the press, has consumed much of Europe's diplomatic bandwidth at the meeting.
Ukraine has until Thursday to respond to the Russian–American proposal.
