What is the Weather Prediction Game?

Correct predictions earn points, which you collect to compete for the victory in the overall competition or in your own group game. The Top 10 will be rewarded with product packages, and prizes will also be raffled off every other day among those who played on that specific day. You can thus join the prize hunt at any point during December.

Anyone can create their own internal wager group games in the Weather Prediction Game and invite, for example, their friends or work group. Yle's meteorologists and other personalities have also been invited to join the Weather Prediction Game to compete on equal terms with all Finns for the title of the sharpest weather expert.

The Weather Prediction Game uses the nickname set in your Yle Account, which will be visible in the group games and in the game's Top 10. The nickname can be changed in the Yle Account settings. Players' nicknames may also be displayed during weather broadcasts.

We reserve the right to disqualify inappropriate nicknames, inappropriately named groups, and users attempting technical cheating from the Weather Prediction Game. We reserve the right to make changes.

Rules and Point Distribution

The Weather Prediction Game includes 28 predictions related to the weather for upcoming days, plus two special predictions related to holiday weather. The maximum score for each daily prediction is 30, and for the special predictions, it is 80, meaning a maximum of 1000 points can be earned in total from the 30 predictions.

The following general rules apply:

Data Material: All measurement data used in the Weather Prediction Game is based on the official observation material of the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).
Measurement Location: If only the name of the locality is mentioned in the prediction (e.g., "Rovaniemi") without separate definition of the measurement station, the official observation station in that locality deemed best by Yle's meteorologists at the time and decided upon in advance will be used as the measurement point for the result (e.g., Rovaniemi Airport observation station).
Measurement Time: If the time is not precisely defined in the prediction (e.g., simply "day's highest temperature"), the official measurement period or time decided upon in advance by Yle's meteorology team and defined in the rules will be used to resolve the prediction. This time may vary depending on the prediction subject. However, unless otherwise specifically defined for the subject, all daily measurements (e.g., highest/lowest temperature, precipitation amount) are resolved based on the official calendar day data between 00:00 – 24:00.
The game results follow mathematical rounding rules to the nearest whole number. Therefore, 7.8 degrees rounds to eight, while 7.4 degrees rounds to seven.
If the primary measurement station for the subject cannot deliver official FMI data at the agreed time, data from the nearest functioning official FMI weather station from the same period will be used to resolve the result. If substitute data cannot be found, the subject in question will be voided and no points will be awarded for it.
If the result of the wager is not directly related to official weather data the correct answer will be decided by Yles meterologists. For example “Will the guests at the Linnan juhlat need an umbrella when arriving at the palace?”

Who can participate in the Weather Prediction Game? All users of the Yle app can participate in the Weather Prediction Game.

How long is the Weather Prediction Game played? The first predictions of the Weather Prediction Game close on Monday, December 1st, and the final scores will be clear on Friday, January 2nd.

How often can one predict the weather in the Weather Prediction Game? The Weather Prediction Game has a total of 30 predictions, 28 of which are so-called daily predictions and two are bonus predictions related to public holidays. Daily predictions were published two at a time every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Starting 12.12, we are moving to an automatic schedule: new predictions unlock three times a week, immediately after the current ones close. The bonus predictions related to Christmas and New Year are open from the start of the game and close a few days before each public holiday.

In which languages can the Weather Prediction Game be played? The Weather Prediction Game can be played in Finnish, Swedish, and experimentally in English.
