Helsinki's Christmas Market at the downtown Senate Square opens for business on Friday 28 November.

Featuring more than 100 merchants, small cafes and eateries, the market will be open daily until 22 December.

The market will see around 20 new operators, according to its organiser, the city-owned Helsinki Events Foundation.

In addition to the many merchant stalls, the event also features free carousel rides and an expanded restaurant and food court area.

Last year's Christmas Market drew more than 600,000 visitors, far exceeding the count of 350,000 in 2023.

The foundation has posted a list of vendors and other information about the event on its website.

However, the event at Senate Square is not the only Christmas market in town.

The so-called Manta Christmas Market, near the harbourside Havis Amanda statue, opens on 5 December and will continue until Epiphany on 6 January. Open daily from 11am to 7pm, the event will offer a variety of merchants selling food and gifts.

It is being arranged by the city-owned firm Helsinki City Premises.

The company's CEO, Peggy Bauer, told Yle last week that the two nearby Christmas markets will be linked with an event between them.

The aim is to make the city livelier during the holiday season while linking the two markets into a more cohesive whole, she said.

Another holiday-themed market, the Kukontori Christmas Market at the Forum shopping centre's eponymous square starts on 1 December and will continue until 21 December.
