As it does around this time of year, search giant Google has published the year's most popular searches in Finland and around the world.
In compiling its lists, Google divided the categories into eight groups: top searches, people, music, entertainment and recipes — as well as 'what', 'why' and 'how' searches.
According to Google's communications chief for Finland and Norway, Sondre Ronander, search trends might be the best way to find out what people in Finland are thinking about.
Ronander said the search topics included big news stories, people seeking clarifications about confusing information on social media, as well as things that people prefer to keep private.
Leading the top searches category was Charlie Kirk, the US right-wing activist who was assassinated at a public event in Utah in September.
That category also included many searches for Eemili Peltonen, the Finnish MP who died by suicide in August. People also searched for information about the grandfather of heavy metal, British rock vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, who died shortly after a Black Sabbath reunion concert over the summer.
Searches for deceased public figures have been common in past years as well, according to Google.
The tech giant's top five search terms in Finland were:
1. Charlie Kirk
3. Eemili Peltonen
4. Ozzy Osbourne
5. XRP (cryptocurrency)
Google's music searches in Finland were topped by:
1. KAJ (the Finnish comedy trio who represented Sweden at Eurovision)
2. Ultra Bra (the early 2000s sensation that played two big Helsinki shows over the summer)
3. Pelle Miljoona (Finland's veteran punk pioneer)
4. Jonna Tervomaa (singer songwriter)
5. One Morning Left (the Finnish metalcore group that disbanded after its vocalist became the subject of child grooming allegations)
Punk legend Miljoona and singer Tervomaa were also in the top "people" searches category. However, that list was led by searches for Ed Gein, the US serial killer featured in the Netflix documentary series 'Monster: The Ed Gein Story'.
The top "What…" searches were:
1. What does 6 7 mean?
2. What does sigma mean? (slang for 'bad boy')
3. What is happening on the Russian border?
4. What does - mean? (it's a rude acronym)
5. What does tuff mean? (a new word for 'cool')
Most of the answers to the question about the numbers 6 7 lead to American NBA pro LaMelo Ball, a basketballer who's six feet and seven inches tall. The term 'six seven' became a popular internet meme at the beginning of the year.
The top "Why…" searches were:
1. Why isn't Snapchat working?
2. Why is minced meat out of stock?
3. Why is electricity expensive now?
4. Why did Israel attack Iran?
5. Why does RebelWerks sell everything?
"How…" searches were topped by:
1. How many US senators are there? (100)
2. How many periods are in basketball games? (four)
3. How tall is [Finnish high jumper] Ella Mikkola? (this remains a mystery)
4. How many MPs are in the Finnish Parliament? (200)
5. How quickly does sunstroke occur? (it can happen very quickly)
