FM: "No indications the US planning Greenland takeover"

The United States and Denmark are both founding members of Nato.

Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen (NCP) on Thursday said remarks by the US administration about acquiring Greenland are worrying.

"Denmark has assessed that the messages from the United States must be taken seriously, and we rely on Denmark's assessment," Valtonen said at parliament on Thursday.

She stressed that Finland supports Denmark and Greenland's right to self-determination.

"Finland and the other Nordic countries have exceptional expertise in Arctic conditions, which we are happy to share with Nato allies to strengthen Arctic security, but this cannot be done by threatening allies," she told reporters.

Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee held an extraordinary meeting to discuss recent developments in Greenland and Venezuela, undersea cable disruptions in the Baltic Sea, and the security situation in Ukraine.

Valtonen also described as "quite a news item" the White House announcement that it will withdraw from 66 international organisations and agreements.

According to Valtonen, there are nonetheless no indications that the United States is preparing a military takeover of Greenland.

The United States and Denmark are both founding members of Nato.
