Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) has identified social media as a major factor behind insufficient physical activity among children and teens.
"Screen time is directly linked to how much our children and young people move and engage in hobbies," Orpo said at an event organised by the Finnish Olympic Committee.
Globally, Australia became the first country to ban social media for all under-16s. Several European countries are considering similar measures. Norway and Denmark are among those planning restrictions for kids under 15.
Speaking at the mobility-focused summit on Wednesday, Orpo said he supports banning social media use for those under 15, citing screen time as one of the biggest obstacles to kids moving more.
"I am deeply concerned about the lack of physical activity among children and young people, and the fact that it is increasing," he said.
