Finland is increasing its support of efforts to reform Ukraine's education system, the Finnish foreign affairs ministry has announced.

The project, called Learning2gether2, is a 20-million-euro investment in "Ukraine’s EU approximation, reconstruction and long-term education reform", the ministry said in a press release on Wednesday.

The project will start this year and it is set to continue until 2029.

According to the ministry, Ukraine asked Finland for assistance in developing its educational system.

"This project will accelerate Ukraine’s extensive New Ukrainian School reform, with a particular focus on developing general upper secondary education," the ministry said.

The project's goals include improving learning outcomes, strengthening education of teachers and ensuring "that high-quality education is available to everyone in Ukraine regardless of their background or where they live".

According to the ministry, Ukraine's educational sector has endured increasing pressure from Russia's ongoing invasion, as well as during the Covid pandemic.

"Making sure that young people have access to education is one way of supporting Ukraine's reconstruction and is an investment in the country’s future. Education builds hope and will boost Ukraine’s productivity and competitiveness," Ville Tavio (Finns), the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development, said in the release.

Development consulting firm Niras Finland will be responsible for the project's technical assistance requirements, according to the ministry.
