Helsinki district court has remanded two teenage boys in connection with a blaze that gutted a bike shop in the Lauttasaari neighbourhood early Tuesday.

The fire, which broke out on the ground floor of a residential building, left nearby apartments uninhabitable.

Police allege the suspects, born in 2008 and 2009, deliberately set the fire. Both were taken into custody shortly after the fire.

Investigators are probing the motive and circumstances of the attack.

"All lines of inquiry remain open," said detective superintendent Masi Puolakka.

A non-profit supporting Ukraine, Your Finnish Friends, has premises at the same bike shop. Police, however, said there is no evidence connecting the blaze to the shop owner's charitable work.
