In Ukraine, people receive app alerts about approaching drone strikes.

Finland is now developing a similar system. The new feature will be integrated into the 112 Suomi mobile app, which already carries emergency alerts.

Alongside it, authorities are building a warning system based on text messages as a fallback in emergencies.

"They serve slightly different purposes," explained Jussi Korhonen, who heads civil emergency preparedness under the Interior Ministry.

The text message system is intended for emergency alerts, while the app would provide more detailed information.

Development of the app is expected to run until late 2027, though it could be completed sooner.

Projects for hazard alerts and public warning systems received around six million euros in funding in the government's 2025 supplementary budget. The European Union is also contributing roughly 500,000 euros towards the effort.
