Optimal design of a subsurface redox barrier
AIChE Journal, 1999
Harmful contaminants such as chromium (Cr+6), and TCE can be removed from groundwater by reactions with reduced subsurface sediments. Establishing an in situ Fe(II) barrier through the reduction of soil-bound Fe(III) to Fe(II) by injecting a sodium dithionite (Na2S2O4) solution is studied. Critical to this problem is the possible formation and expansion of a zone around the injection, where all the soil-bound Fe(III) is reduced to Fe(II). Different reaction models apply inside and outside of this zone so that a determination of this moving boundary is a fundamental part of the solution. The complete analytic solution to this problem was used to develop optimal process parameters, such as injection rate and operational time, that maximize the radius of the Fe...

Involvement of Sac1 phosphoinositide phosphatase in the metabolism of phosphatidylserine in the yeastSaccharomyces cerevisiae
Yeast, 2014
Sac1 is a phosphoinositide phosphatase that preferentially dephosphorylates phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate. Mutation of SAC1 causes not only the accumulation of phosphoinositides but also reduction of the phosphatidylserine (PS) level in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this study, we characterized the mechanism underlying the PS reduction in SAC1-deleted cells. Incorporation of 32P into PS was significantly delayed in sac1∆ cells. Such a delay was also observed in SAC1- and PS decarboxylase gene-deleted cells, suggesting that the reduction in the PS level is caused by a reduction in the rate of biosynthesis of PS. A reduction in the PS level was also observed with repression of STT4 encoding phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase or deletion of VPS34 encod...

OP18 * IDENTIFICATION AND CHARACTERISATION OF MICRORNAS INVOLVED IN GLIOBLASTOMA CELL PROLIFERATION AND SURVIVAL
Neuro-Oncology, 2014
INTRODUCTION: There is a pressing need for new therapeutic approaches for the treatment of glioblastoma (GBM). MicroRNAs(miRs)are single-stranded non-coding RNAs, 22-24nt in length, that function by reducing translation or causing degradation of target mRNAs. MiRs have been shown to play roles in multiple hallmark characteristics of GBM,suggesting that miRs and their associated pathways may be of therapeutic importance. METHOD: The miRIDIAN mimic library (Dharmacon) that encompasses all human miRs annotated in miRBase v16.0 was used with a high-throughput imaging platform (Operetta) to identify miRs with potent effects on GBM cell proliferation and survival. Screens were performed in duplicate on U251 (adult) and KNS42 (paediatric) GBM cell lines. Cell numbe...

Tunnel Reliability Analysis Based on the Combination of Modified FOSM and Numerical Calculation Program
AMM, 2014
Evaluate the reliability for the deformation of structure is a hard work. Usually stochastic finite element method or response surface method was adopted. In this paper, a new way by combining of numerical method and modified reliability analysis method is proposed. The modified first order second moment method (FOSM) was introduced and three examples are employed to verify the feasibility and the effectiveness of this method. The examples showed the modified FOSM had the advantage of faster convergence rate, higher calculation accuracy in comparison with FOSM, response surface method and optimization algorithm method. Combining finite element method program with modified FOSM method is applied to analyze the reliability index of deformation of a tunnel. The...

Design and experimental validation of a snapshot polarization contrast imager
Appl. Opt., 2009
We present a degree of polarization imaging system based on a Wollaston prism and a single CCD camera. This architecture eliminates technical inaccuracies and noise sources that are present in experimental setups containing a polarization switching element. After the acquisition of two images corresponding to two orthogonal states of polarization, one can compute the orthogonal state contrast image (OSCI), which is an estimate of the local degree of polarization of the backscattered light when the observed materials are purely depolarizing. The instrument design coupled to an efficient calibration enables the estimation of the OSCI from a single image acquisition and significant reduction of technical noise present in other polarization imaging systems. The ...

ISO 14001 adoption and industrial waste generation: The case of Swedish manufacturing firms
Waste Manag Res, 2015
Adoption of environmental management systems (EMSs) based on ISO 14001 has constituted one of the most important developments in sustainable industry management in recent years. Previous research on the impact of EMSs has relied heavily on corporate representatives’ subjective perception of benefits. Moreover, studies tend to focus on the systems’ impact on firms’ overall environmental performance, not distinguishing between the differences in different environmental aspects. This study aims to contribute knowledge about the influence of certified EMSs on industrial waste generation based on objective industrial waste data derived from mandatory annual environmental reports. The study focuses on changes in waste generation over a period of 12 years and...

Acquiring patent search reports with no fear of wilful infringement under US patent law
Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice, 2015
To make a business decision, a company may conduct a patent search to make sure that it will not infringe patents or that the technology under development will be patentable. Because a patent search may relate to technology development, a company must be aware of wilful infringement caused by acquiring a patent search report. Wilful infringement occurs when ‘the infringer acted despite an objectively high likelihood that its actions constituted infringement of a valid patent.’ If wilful infringement is established, courts may award treble damages to the patentee. By producing a patent search report, a company may be proved to learn an objectively high risk of patent infringement. Therefore it is necessary to analyse the risk of acquiring a patent search ...

SUMO-Binding Entities (SUBEs) as Tools for the Enrichment, Isolation, Identification, and Characterization of the SUMO Proteome in Liver Cancer
JoVE, 2019
Post-translational modification is a key mechanism regulating protein homeostasis and function in eukaryotic cells. Among all ubiquitin-like proteins in liver cancer, the modification by SUMO (Small Ubiquitin MOdifier) has been given the most attention. Isolation of endogenous SUMOylated proteins in vivo is challenging due to the presence of active SUMO-specific proteases. Initial studies of SUMOylation in vivo were based on the molecular detection of specific SUMOylated proteins (e.g., by western blot). However, in many cases, antibodies, generally made with non-modified recombinant protein, did not immunoprecipitate SUMOylated forms of the protein of interest. Nickel chromatography has been the other approach to study SUMOylation by capturing histidine-tag...

Fabrication, characterization and photocatalytic properties of Ag nanoparticles modified TiO2 NTs
Journal of Alloys and Compounds, 2012
Abstract Ordered anatase TiO 2 nanotubes (TiO 2 NTs) on Ti substrate were synthesized by electrochemical anodization and subsequently vapor-thermal treatment. Ag nanoparticles were decorated on TiO 2 NTs by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used for the characterization of surface morphology, phase composition, and microstructure of the original TiO 2 NTs, the vapor-thermally treated TiO 2 NTs and the Ag nanoparticles decorated TiO 2 NTs. The results indicate that vapor-thermal treatment favors to the transform...

Lap liver resection decreases mortality and complications by propensity score-adjusted regression
HPB, 2018
Introduction: The use of laparoscopic liver resection has greatly increased over the last two decades with continuing expansion of indications. Prior observational studies demonstrating improvements in morbidity and mortality have been largely limited by selection bias and small sample size. Here we present a large single-center case control study using propensity score-adjusted multivariate regression to account for potential confounders on mortality and complication rates following laparoscopic vs open liver resection. Methods: We used case-controlled retrospective data from a single center we performed causal inference statistics of propensity score-adjusted multivariate regression augmented by forward and backward regression to examine mortality and comp...

Spectroscopic study of an atmospheric pressure dc glow discharge with a water electrode in atomic and molecular gases
Plasma Sources Sci. Technol., 2010
The positive column of dc excited atmospheric pressure glow discharges in a metal pin–water electrode system is investigated in air, N2, He, Ar, N2O, CO2 and He–N2 mixtures. The electric field and the plasma temperatures in the positive column are measured and the effect of the filling gas on the optical emission is examined. Estimates of the electron temperature and density and the observed emission properties indicate that the formation processes of the excited dissociation fragments of H2O are due to recombination processes rather than direct electron excitation. Deviation from a Boltzmann rotational population distribution of OH(A) is observed in all gases due to the formation process of OH(A). In the case of He the non-Boltzmann behaviour is more pr...

The influence of pore morphology on corrosion
Corrosion Science, 1998
Porous titanium parts fabricated powder-metallurgically are known to have pore morphologies that range from large, open, interconnected pores to small, isolated pores. Although the latter geometry is synonymous with highly dense and mechanically strong materials, it conceivably encourages stagnation of electrolyte and prevents its free flow crucial to the ion incorporation/titanium release process of passivation. In this case, the depletion of oxygen leads to crevice corrosion which further increases the corrosion rate of these large-surfacearea systems. To investigate the localised corrosion resistance of porous titanium (porosity 10–30%, pore size 50–100μm), cyclic polarisation tests were performed in saline solution at 37 °C, on porous pure titanium...

Beta-Hydroxy-Beta-Methyl-Butyrate, L-glutamine, and L-arginine Supplementation Improves Radiation-Induce Acute Intestinal Toxicity
Journal of Dietary Supplements, 2018
We aimed to evaluate effects of β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate, L-glutamine, and L-arginine (HMB/GLN/ARG) on radiation-induced acute intestinal toxicity. Forty rats were divided into four groups: group (G) 1 was defined as control group, and G2 was radiation therapy (RT) control group. G3 and G4 were HMB/GLN/ARG control and RT plus HMB/GLN/ARG groups, respectively. HMB/GLN/ARG started from day of RT and continued until the animals were sacrificed 10 days after RT. The extent of surface epithelium smoothing, villous atrophy, lamina propria inflammation, cryptitis, crypt distortion, regenerative atypia, vascular dilatation and congestion, and fibrosis were quantified on histological sections of intestinal mucosa. Statistical analyses were performed using the ana...

BackgroundPrior literature has documented a strong correlation between living arrangements and older adults' health outcomes. However, few studies have explained why this association exists. This study took the health lifestyle theory approach and brought health lifestyles into the link between living arrangements and Chinese oldest-old health outcomes. It examined (1) whether healthy lifestyle behaviors among the oldest-old varied by household contexts and (2) whether the health disparities among the Chinese oldest-old in different household contexts could be partially explained by their healthy lifestyles.MethodsUsing the most recent 2018 data released...

Do stream fish track climate change? Assessing distribution shifts in recent decades
Ecography, 2013
Understanding the ability of species to shift their distribution ranges in response to climate change is crucial for conservation biologists and resources managers. Although freshwater ecosystems include some of the most imperilled fauna worldwide, such range shifts have been poorly documented in streams and rivers and have never been compared to the current velocity of climate change. Based on national monitoring data, we examined the distributional changes of 32 stream fish species in France and quantified potential time lags in species responses, providing a unique opportunity to analyze range shifts over recent decades of warming in freshwater environments. A multi‐facetted approach, based on several range measures along spatial gradients, allowed us t...

Blockade of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors inhibit nicotine-induced tumor growth and vimentin expression in non-small cell lung cancer through MEK/ERK signaling way
Oncol Rep, 2017
Nicotine can stimulate the progression of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) through nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). The persistent proliferation of cancer cells is one of the key effects of nicotinic signaling. The present study aimed to clarify the mechanism of nicotine-induced proliferation in NSCLCs at the receptor subtype level. We have previously reported that there are various subtypes of nicotinic receptors expressed in NSCLC cell lines. In the present study, we demonstrated that blocking α7nAChRs agonized by nicotine could suppress the proliferation of H1299 cells in vitro and decrease H1299 tumor xenograft growth in nude mice. During this process, the expression of vimentin was also markedly attenuated, concomitant with the decreased e...

Minimizing Artifacts in Three-electrode Double Layer Capacitance Measurements Caused by Stray Capacitances
Electrochimica Acta, 2015
We analyze the influence of stray capacitances on three-electrode electrochemical impedance measurements with ion-blocking electrodes. This setup is widely used for double layer capacitance measurements. The analysis is based on a three-terminal equivalent network and reveals that stray capacitances lead to different types of capacitive and inductive artifacts. We show that the type of artifact depends strongly on (i) the positioning of the reference electrode between the working and the counter electrode and (ii) on ratio of the double layer capacitance of the working electrode to the stray capacitances. We compare the theoretical results to experimental results obtained for the double layer capacitance of the working electrode in three electrochemical cell...

Analysis of the tensile behavior of a TWIP steel based on the texture and microstructure evolutions
Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2009
The texture and microstructure evolutions of a fine-grained TWIP steel subjected to tensile tests at room temperature were investigated in relation to the mechanical behavior. This steel combines both high ductility and strength owing to the TWIP effect. Also the steel exhibits a high strain hardening rate that evolves according to five stages, which are related to the microstructure and texture evolutions and characteristics. The formation of nano-twins in the initial stage of deformation leads to an increase in strain hardening rate. The development of the pronounced fiber in the tensile direction sustains mechanical twinning and maintains the strain hardening rate on a high level. The resulting microstructure exhibits several types of twin configu...

Charge-transfer excitations in lanthanum compounds measured by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the M5 edge
Phys. Rev. B, 2001
We present resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra from La metal ${\mathrm{La}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$ and ${\mathrm{LaF}}_{3}.$ Monochromatic photon excitation with energy across the La ${3d}_{5/2}$ ${(M}_{5})$ threshold was used and the valence scattering was monitored at selected incoming energies. The spectra vs the outgoing photon energy show the elastic peak, the $5p\ensuremath{-}{3d}_{5/2}$ decay peak and, in between, a feature due to charge transfer excitation. This brings an electron from the ligand to the lanthanum $4f$ states (in the case of ${\mathrm{La}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$ and ${\mathrm{LaF}}_{3})$ and results from a charge fluctuation from ${4f}^{0}$ to ${4f}^{1}$ occupation in the case of La metal. The energy transferred to the solid w...

A Binary Superior Tracking Artificial Bee Colony with Dynamic Cauchy Mutation for Feature Selection
Complexity, 2020
This paper aims to propose an improved learning algorithm for feature selection, termed as binary superior tracking artificial bee colony with dynamic Cauchy mutation (BSTABC-DCM). To enhance exploitation capacity, a binary learning strategy is proposed to enable each bee to learn from the superior individuals in each dimension. A dynamic Cauchy mutation is introduced to diversify the population distribution. Ten datasets from UCI repository are adopted as test problems, and the average results of cross-validation of BSTABC-DCM are compared with other seven popular swarm intelligence metaheuristics. Experimental results demonstrate that BSTABC-DCM could obtain the optimal classification accuracy and select the best representative features for the UCI problem...

Bureaucratizing the Muse: Public Funds and the Cultural Worker.
Social Forces, 1988
The Comprehensive Employment and Training Act made a dramatic entrace on the American economic and social stage in December 1973. No comparable commitment of public funds to subsidize jobs had occurred since the Works Progress Administration programs of the 1930s. An important beneficiary of CETA was the Artists-in-Residence program, in operation from 1977 to 1981. As part of the largest direct monetary transfer to artists since the WPA, AIR employed 108 Chicago-area artists each year in nine fields from dance and music to video and graphic arts. Bureaucratizing the Muse is a study of the Chicago AIR program. By its very nature art is a nonrational process, even at times antirational, and the idea of organizing artists in this kind of work environment was an...

Sevoflurane Is Biotransformed by Guinea Pig Liver Slices but Causes Minimal Cytotoxicity
Anesthesia & Analgesia, 1992
Guinea pig liver slices were used to evaluate the biotransformation and hepatotoxic potential of sevoflurane. Precision-cut liver slices (250-300 microns thick) were incubated in sealed roller vials in buffer at 37 degrees C under 95% O2. Sevoflurane was added to produce 0.9 or 2.1 mM medium concentrations. After incubation (6-24 h), the intracellular K+ content and protein synthesis were determined, along with the defluorination of sevoflurane. Isoflurane was included for comparative purposes. Sevoflurane (2.1 mM) and isoflurane (2.3 mM) had no effect on slice K+ content, but both anesthetics depressed protein synthesis. The biotransformation of sevoflurane was maximal at 95% O2, with threefold more F- produced from sevoflurane than isoflurane. Sevoflurane ...

Paradox Lost: Illusion Regained
Cortex, 2005
Classification and detection of biological structures in Electron Micrographs (EM) is a relatively new large scale image analysis problem. The primary challenges are in modeling diverse visual characteristics and development of scalable techniques. In this paper we propose novel methods for synapse detection and localization, an important problem in connectomics. We first propose an attribute based descriptor for characterizing synaptic junctions. These descriptors are task specific, low dimensional and can be scaled across large image sizes. Subsequently, techniques for fast localization of these junctions are proposed. Experimental results on images acquired from a mammalian retinal tissue compare favorably with state of the art descriptors used for object...

Fatigue and delayed brittle failure of vacuum melted and cadmium plated steel
Corrosion Science, 1967
The detrimental effect of cyanide cadmium plating on fatigue strength and delayed brittle failure performance of an ultra high strength steel is reduced effectively by using vacuum melted steel as the basis metal. This phenomenon has been related predominantly to the increased tensile ductility of the steel with comparatively low hydrogen concentration.

Catalytic Liquid Phase Oxidation of Toluene to Benzoic Acid
Chem Eng & Technol, 2008
The production of benzoic acid from toluene in the liquid phase with pure oxygen was studied. Investigations have been carried out with a view to determining the most suitable reaction conditions with respect to operating variables including oxygen flow rate, reaction temperature, batch time and catalyst loading. In a series of batch experiments carried out at 4 atm, the optimum values of mole ratio of oxygen to toluene, temperature, reaction time, and catalyst loading were found to be 2, 157 °C, 2 h and 0.57 g/L, respectively. In addition, a kinetic study was carried out by taking into consideration the optimum reaction conditions. The model dependent on the formation of benzyl radical was found to be feasible for describing the catalytic oxidation of tolu...

Urethroplasty for Radiotherapy Induced Bulbomembranous Strictures: A Multi-Institutional Experience
Journal of Urology, 2011
Radiotherapy induced urethral strictures are often difficult to manage due to proximal location, compromised vascular supply and poor wound healing. To determine the success of urethroplasty for radiation induced strictures we performed a multi-institutional review of men who underwent urethroplasty for urethral obstruction.A total of 30 men (mean age 67 years) underwent urethroplasty at 3 separate institutions. Excision with primary anastomosis was used in 24 of 30 patients (80%), with 4 of 30 requiring a genital fasciocutaneous skin flap and 2 a buccal graft. Hospitalization was less than 23 hours for 70% of the patients. Recurrence was defined as cystoscopic identification of urethral narrowing to less than 16Fr in diameter. All strictures were located in ...

The effects of physostigmine and scopolamine on memory for food caches in the black-capped chickadee
Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, 1994
The possible effects of anticholinesterases on the central nervous system and, in particular, on learning and memory, have generated considerable interest. Food caching in the black-capped chickadee is an excellent natural paradigm of spatial working memory. Its susceptibility to cholinergically active drugs was explored in the present study. Our ultimate objective was to use food caching as a natural paradigm for the study of the consequences in birds of sublethal exposure to anticholinesterase insecticides. Biochemical analyses showed that administration of the anticholinesterase physostigmine (eserine) led to a short-lived effect, with recovery of brain cholinesterase levels already underway 5 min after an intramuscular injection. Birds administered the a...

A Novel Experimental Apparatus of a Liquid Desiccant Air-Conditioning System
AMR, 2012
A novel experimental apparatus of a liquid desiccant air-conditioning system was introduced. The system differed from similar researches in that it could handle the total load of the conditioned space without any refrigeration equipment and it worked in ventilation mode, which could greatly improve the indoor air quality. The schematic diagram of the system was presented and circulating processes of air, water and lithium chloride solution in the system were introduced. The definition of thermal coefficient of performance (TCOP) for the system was introduced and main operating parameters that could affect TCOP were analyzed. The tested TCOP of the system was 0.72~0.98 in summer and 0.30~0.51 in autumn, which showed that liquid discussant air conditioning...

Critical heat flux for subcooled flow boiling in micro-channel heat sinks
International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 2009
Critical heat flux (CHF) was measured and examined with high-speed video for subcooled flow boiling in micro-channel heat sinks using HFE 7100 as working fluid. High subcooling was achieved by pre-cooling the working fluid using a secondary low-temperature refrigeration system. The high subcooling greatly reduced both bubble departure diameter and void fraction, and precluded flow pattern transitions beyond the bubbly regime. CHF was triggered by vapor blanket formation along the micro-channel walls despite the presence of abundant core liquid, which is consistent with the mechanism of Departure from Nucleate Boiling (DNB). CHF increased with increasing mass velocity and/or subcooling and decreasing hydraulic diameter for a given total mass flow rate. A pre-...

Effects of cathodic current density and temperature on morphology and microstructure of iridium coating prepared by electrodeposition in molten salt under the air atmosphere
Applied Surface Science, 2013
Iridium coating was prepared on a Re/C substrate (graphite substrate coated with rhenium coating by CVD) using electrodeposition in molten salt of chlorides in the air atmosphere. The effects of cathodic current density and temperature on both the morphology and microstructure of the coating were studied, respectively. The morphology and orientation of the coating were determined by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The results showed that the cathodic current density and temperature both affected the surface morphology, roughness, grain size and compactness of the iridium coating. With increasing of current density from 5 to 50 mA/cm2, the surface roughness of the coating increased from Ra 0.98 to Ra 6.29 μm, while the grain...

Psychiatric Discharges Against Medical Advice
Arch Gen Psychiatry, 1963
Emotional illness does not end dramatically with discharge from a psychiatric hospital. Many discharged patients are subsequently rehospitalized for treatment of psychiatric problems. Not all patients leave the hospital initially with the consent of their attending physicians. Sometimes the decision to sign out of the hospital against medical advice is simply a function of the patient's illness, but this decision may be dictated by a variety of other circumstances: financial problems, family pressure on the patient to return home, dissatisfaction with hospital routine and treatment, etc. Angrist, Dinitz, Lefton, and Pasamanick1discuss some social and psychological factors in the posthospital situation which appear related to subsequent rehospitali...

Graphene oxide oxidizes stannous ions to synthesize tin sulfide–graphene nanocomposites with small crystal size for high performance lithium ion batteries
J. Mater. Chem., 2012
This study reports a novel strategy of preparing graphene composites by employing graphene oxide as precursor and oxidizer. It is demonstrated that graphene oxide can oxidize stannous ions to form SnS2 and is simultaneously reduced to graphene, directly resulting in the formation of SnSx–graphene (1 < x < 2) nanocomposites. The particle size of SnSx in the nanocomposites is tailored to be about 5 nm, which is much smaller than that obtained in a previous study. As anodic materials for lithium ion batteries, SnSx–graphene nanocomposites retain a discharge capacity of 860 mA h g−1 after 150 cycles at a charge–discharge rate of 0.2 C, higher than the theoretical capacities of SnS2 (645 mA h g−1) and SnS (782 mA h g−1) based on the traditional mechan...

Cold Argon Plasma as Adjuvant Tumour Therapy on Progressive Head and Neck Cancer: A Preclinical Study
Applied Sciences, 2019
Investigating cold argon plasma (CAP) for medical applications is a rapidly growing, innovative field of research. The controllable supply of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species through CAP has the potential for utilization in tumour treatment. Maxillofacial surgery is limited if tumours grow on vital structures such as the arteria carotis. Here CAP could be considered as an option for adjuvant intraoperative tumour therapy especially in the case of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. Further preclinical research is necessary to investigate the efficacy of this technology for future clinical applications in cancer treatment. Initially, a variety of in vitro assays was performed on two cell lines that served as surrogate for the squamous cell carci...

Ultraviolet absorption spectrum of the half-filled bilayer graphene
Superlattices and Microstructures, 2018
We consider the optical properties of the half-filled AB-stacked bilayer graphene with the excitonic pairing and condensation between the layers. Both intra and interlayer local Coulomb interaction effects have been taken into account and the role of the exact Fermi energy has been discussed in details. We have calculated the absorption coefficient, refractive index, dielectric response functions and the electron energy loss spectrum for different interlayer Coulomb interaction regimes and for different temperatures. Considering the full four-band model for the interacting AB bilayer graphene, a good agreement is achieved with other theoretical and experimental works on the subject, in particular, limiting cases of the theory. The calculations, presented her...

Risk assessment framework for exposure of cargo and ports to natural hazards and climate extremes
Maritime Policy & Management, 2016
ABSTRACTThere is an increase in risks and catastrophic losses in maritime transport including ports and cargo. Significant losses have been associated with large scale natural hazards, such as earthquakes, tsunami, cyclones, and other extreme weather events. This paper identifies the main gaps in understanding maritime risks in transportation research. The gaps are attributed to insufficient empirical work available from the maritime transport and logistics research community to guide multi-risk and natural hazards impact assessment on seaport and cargo. In addition, disaster studies communities have barely made adequate efforts to understand and assess port and cargo risks arising from multi-hazards and disaster events. This paper examines existing conceptu...

Competitive and Cooperative Adsorptions of Bovine Serum Albumin and Lysozyme to Synthetic Calcium Hydroxyapatites
Langmuir, 2000
Competitive and cooperative adsorptions of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and lysozyme (LSZ) on synthetic calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHap) were investigated at 15 °C in deionized distilled water of pH 6 by using a liquid chromatography method. The adsorption rate of LSZ was faster than that of BSA due to its larger diffusion coefficient, though the saturated adsorption amount of LSZ was less than that of BSA. The rates of BSA adsorption onto CaHap did not change by the addition of LSZ, while those of LSZ were considerably reduced by addition of BSA with forming (BSA-−LSZ+) agglomerates in the solution. The cooperative adsorption behavior of LSZ was observed in the presence of lower amounts of BSA due to the preferential adsorption of the larger (BSA-−LSZ+) ag...

Therapeutic Antibody Engineering To Improve Viscosity and Phase Separation Guided by Crystal Structure
Mol. Pharmaceutics, 2016
Antibodies at high concentrations often reveal unanticipated biophysical properties suboptimal for therapeutic development. The purpose of this work was to explore the use of point mutations based on crystal structure information to improve antibody physical properties such as viscosity and phase separation (LLPS) at high concentrations. An IgG4 monoclonal antibody (Mab4) that exhibited high viscosity and phase separation at high concentration was used as a model system. Guided by the crystal structure, four CDR point mutants were made to evaluate the role of hydrophobic and charge interactions on solution behavior. Surprisingly and unpredictably, two of the charge mutants, R33G and N35E, showed a reduction in viscosity and a lower propensity to form LLPS at...

Historical climate controls soil respiration responses to current soil moisture
Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A., 2017
Ecosystem carbon losses from soil microbial respiration are a key component of global carbon cycling, resulting in the transfer of 40-70 Pg carbon from soil to the atmosphere each year. Because these microbial processes can feed back to climate change, understanding respiration responses to environmental factors is necessary for improved projections. We focus on respiration responses to soil moisture, which remain unresolved in ecosystem models. A common assumption of large-scale models is that soil microorganisms respond to moisture in the same way, regardless of location or climate. Here, we show that soil respiration is constrained by historical climate. We find that historical rainfall controls both the moisture dependence and sensitivity of respiration....

Phosphorylation sites of microtubule-associated protein 1B (MAP 1B) are involved in axon growth and regeneration
Mol Brain, 2019
The growth cone is a specialized structure that forms at the tip of extending axons in developing and regenerating neurons. This structure is essential for accurate synaptogenesis at developmental stages, and is also involved in plasticity-dependent synaptogenesis and axon regeneration in the mature brain. Thus, understanding the molecular mechanisms utilized by growth cones is indispensable to understanding neuronal network formation and rearrangement. Phosphorylation is the most important and commonly utilized protein modification in signal transduction. We previously identified microtubule-associated protein 1B (MAP 1B) as the most frequently phosphorylated protein among ~ 1200 phosphorylated proteins. MAP 1B has more than 10 phosphorylation sites that we...

The influence of suction on the structure of turbulence in fully developed pipe flow
J. Fluid Mech., 1979
The effect of uniform wall suction on the structure of turbulence in a fully established turbulent pipe flow has been measured, with special attention to the critical layers close to the wall. Uniform suction was introduced into a pipe flow with a Reynolds number of 17250 by means of a porous-walled section 2·2 diameters in length with very fine perforations. The effect of suction on the turbulent energy balance was then measured over the entire cross-section at four axial locations. The results indicate the following. The amplitudes of the three principal velocity fluctuation components are reduced by suction, but to differing degrees. Moreover, the effects of suction on the amplitudes of these fluctuations develop at differing rates such that the x -wise ...

Laboratory Triaxial Test Study on Soil Reinforced with Roots of Manilagrass
AMR, 2011
Laboratory triaxial tests of the soil reinforced with roots of Manilagrass were carried out in order to understand the stress-strain relationship. The change of shear strength indexes of the soil reinforced with roots of Manilagrass was investigated with the quantity of grassroots planted in the soil specimens. The results of laboratory triaxial tests show that the strength and capacity for resisting the deformation of soil reinforced with roots are better than those of unreinforced soil. And under the certain number of grassroots layers, the strength and capacity for resisting the deformation of soil reinforced with roots increase firstly and then reduce with the increasing of Manilagrass roots quantity. In other words, there is an optimal quantity of Manil...

Elevated preoperative platelet distribution width predicts poor prognosis in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Sci Rep, 2019
Abstract Activated platelets play a multifaceted role in tumorigenesis and progression. Platelet distribution width (PDW) is generally applied platelet parameters from routine blood test. Preoperative PDW has been considered a prognostic factor in many cancers. Nevertheless, the prognostic value of PDW in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unknown. The study aimed to investigate whether preoperative PDW could serve as a prognostic factor in patients with ESCC. A total of 495 patients with ESCC undergoing curative surgery were enrolled. The relationship between PDW and clinical features in ESCC was analyzed using chi-square tests. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine the optimal cut-off value. Folate-related gene variants in Irish families affected by neural tube defects
Front. Genet., 2013
Periconceptional folic acid use can often prevent neural tube defects (NTDs). Variants of genes involved in folate metabolism in mothers and children have been associated with occurrence of NTDs. We identified Irish families with individuals affected by neural tube defects. In these families, we observed that neural tube defects and birth defects overall occurred at a higher rate in the maternal lineage compared with the paternal lineage. The goal of this study was to look for evidence for genetic effects that could explain the discrepancy in the occurrence of these birth defects in the maternal vs. paternal lineage. We genotyped blood samples from 322 individuals from NTD-affected Irish families, identified through their membership in spina bifida associati...

Algebraic invariants of orbit configuration spaces in genus zero associated to finite groups
Topology and its Applications, 2021
We consider orbit configuration spaces associated to finite groups acting freely by orientation preserving homeomorphisms on the 2-sphere minus a finite number of points (eventually none). We compute the cohomology ring and the Poincaré series of these spaces. This generalizes the work of V. Arnold for “classical” configuration spaces of points of the plane. The results imply that the spaces we consider are formal in the sense of rational homotopy theory. We also prove the existence of an LCS formula relating the Poincaré series of such spaces to the ranks of quotients of successive terms of the lower central series of their fundamental group. Such formula is known for the spaces studied by V. Arnold, where fundamental groups are Artin pure braid group...

The First One-Pot Synthesis of Multinuclear 3d-4f Metal–Organic Compounds Involving a Polytopic N,O-Donor Ligand Formed in Situ
Crystal Growth & Design, 2012
In this work we present 16 new 3d-4f metal-organic comounds, which are synthesized by a one-pot method with one uncommon polytopic N,O-donor ligand formed in situ. All these compounds are characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, which reveals isomorphism for them and a special heterometallic trinuclear structure in a perfect linear arrangement. Within this trinuclear unit, the metal(3d)-O-metal(4f) angle and metal(3d)-to-metal(4f) distance is exceptionally small, to our best knowledge, which should present the smallest one in the literature. Moreover, the magnetic properties of partial compounds are explored, revealing that at high temperature paramagnetic behavior is observed and the slow decrease is mainly due to a crystal field effect, at the lo...

A new species of cryptic cyanobacteria isolated from the epidermis of a bottlenose dolphin and as a bioaerosol
Phycologia, 2021
Two cyanobacterial strains, one collected from an epidermal mat present on a dead bottlenose dolphin and the other as a bioaerosol 457 m (1500 ft) above the river, were recently analysed from the St. Johns River, Jacksonville, Florida, USA. Both samples had major phenotypic plasticity which confused morphological identification. Amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene from the isolates revealed that both samples were closely aligned (branch bootstrap support = 100%) with the recently erected genus Komarekiella. Whole genome sequencing and phylogenetic construction also supported the isolation of a new species of cyanobacteria branching from the Nostoc clade. A total evidence approach of molecular, genetic, and ecological examination of these strains support...

A Soft-Switched Hybrid-Modulation Scheme for a Capacitor-Less Three-Phase Pulsating-DC-Link Inverter
IEEE Trans. Power Electron., 2014
A soft-switched hybrid-modulation (HM) scheme is outlined for a dc-link-capacitor-less three-phase high-frequency (HF) pulsating-dc link (PDCL) isolated multistage inverter. The overall inverter comprises a front-end isolated dc/pulsating-dc converter followed by a pulsating-dc/ac converter. Because the two stages are directly connected without a dc-link capacitor, the intermediate link is a PDCL instead of a fixed-dc link as in conventional HF-link inverters. The HM modulates the pulsating-dc/ac converter such that, two of its converter legs are line-switched, while the third leg of the pulsating-dc/ac converter is switched under zero-voltage-switching condition. This is achieved by first modulating the dc/pulsating-dc converter to achieve a specific encodi...

Spectrum sharing in cognitive radio networks: an adaptive game approach
IET Commun., 2012
Throughout this study, an adaptive competitive second-price pay-to-bid sealed auction game is presented as a solution to the fairness problem of spectrum sharing among a number of users in a cognitive radio environment. First, a comparison among three main spectrum-sharing game models; optimal, cooperative and competitive game models is discussed to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each model. The results prove that cooperative games aim to achieve Nash equilibrium between primary and secondary players and provide better revenue to them. Also, it proves that cooperative games are best when the number of secondary users changes dynamically, but only when the number is low. As in practical situations, the number of secondary users might increase d...

Study on Autocatalytic Decomposition of Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) II: Analysis of Intermediate Substances Obtained in the Induction Period and Investigations Regarding Formic Acid
Org. Process Res. Dev., 2021
Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a good solvent as well as a mild oxidizing agent. Several severe incidents associated with DMSO decomposition have been reported in spite of its wide use. The goal of this study is to understand the early stage of DMSO decomposition. In repeated isothermal heating tests of DMSO in an inert atmosphere, two kinds of intermediate substances were found: one contained labile, turbid compounds in the liquid phase, and the other was a white material deposited on the inner wall of the headspace. Analyses of these intermediates were carried out. Among the acids formed in the isothermal heating, formic acid (FA) had the maximum concentration and exhibited the largest effect on shortening the induction period. The behavior and effect of FA ...

Effects of Mn and Al contents on cryogenic-temperature tensile and Charpy impact properties in four austenitic high-Mn steels
Acta Materialia, 2015
Effects of Mn (19 and 22 wt.%) and Al (0 and 2 wt.%) contents on tensile and Charpy impact properties in four austenitic high-Mn steels were investigated at room and cryogenic temperatures. The cryogenic-temperature tensile test results indicated that the yield strength was higher in the Al-added steels than non-Al-added steels, which could be explained by a stress-induced martensitic transformation in the non-Al-added steels. The reduction in ductility was largest in the 19Mn steel, where the transformations to ε- and α′-martensites occurred and their fraction was highest. Charpy impact energies of the 19Mn and 22Mn steels rapidly dropped with decreasing temperature, whereas those of the 19Mn2Al and 22Mn2Al steels slowly decreased. According to the EBSD...

Neurophysiological correlates of persistent vegetative and minimally conscious states
Neuropsychological Rehabilitation, 2005
The evaluation of patients after severe brain injury is a complex process for the clinician, even with the information provided by a detailed neurological examination. The clinical examination often does not provide sufficient information to fully evaluate these patients due to several factors. Limited and inconsistent motor responses may obscure expression of greater cognitive capacities. More importantly, evaluation of the functional integrity of the cerebral cortical, thalamic and basal ganglia system is poorly indicated by the clinical examination in many patients. Neurophysiological studies provide a complementary set of objective data for evaluating brain-injured patients, as well as predicting and following the course of their recovery. This additiona...

Feasibility of Recycling Excess Agricultural Nitrate with Electrodialysis
J of Env Quality, 2017
One of the most serious environmental problems associated with agriculture is excessive nitrate N in waters leaving fields. It is a health hazard in drinking water and a primary cause of hypoxia in ocean waters receiving drainage from agricultural regions. Recent mitigation efforts have focused on techniques that promote denitrification-conversion of excess agricultural nitrate to N. This seems inherently wasteful since industrial production of nitrate fertilizer from N requires a substantial input of energy and is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, it is desirable to develop methods to recycle nitrate, keeping it in a form suitable for reuse as fertilizer. One possibility is electrodialysis, in which direct current is passed through alternati...

Melanogenesis is a physiological pathway for the formation of melanin. Tyrosinase catalyzes the first step of this process and down-regulation of its activity is responsible for the inhibition of melanogenesis. The search for molecules capable of controlling hyperpigmentation is a trend topic in health and cosmetics. A series of heteroarylcoumarins have been synthesized and evaluated. Compounds 4 and 8 exhibited higher tyrosinase inhibitory activities (IC50=0.15 and 0.38μM, respectively), than the reference compound, kojic acid (IC50=17.9μM). Compound 4 acts as competitive, while compound 8 as uncompetitive inhibitor of mushroom tyrosinase. Furthermore, compounds 2 and 8 inhibited tyrosinase activity and melanin production in B16F10 cells. In addition, com...

The use of the theory of critical distance and the stress-gradient approach in the fatigue life estimation of notched components
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part L: Journal of Materials: Design and Applications, 2016
Fatigue life prediction for machine components is a fundamental factor in the industrial world, and therefore several methods can be traced in technical literature to estimate life of notched components. The present paper correlates the classical stress-gradient approach, or support factor method, proposed by Siebel, Neuber and Petersen with the more recent theory of critical distance approach by Tanaka and Taylor. On one hand, the main asset of the support factor method is the punctual information about the stresses needed to estimate the effective stress, namely the maximum stress and stress gradient at the hot spot. By contrast, the theory of the critical distance needs the calculation of the stress distribution for a finite depth inside the material. The...

BCS-BEC crossover in bilayers of cold fermionic polar molecules
Phys. Rev. A, 2012
We investigate the quantum and thermal phase diagram of fermionic polar molecules loaded in a bilayer trapping potential with perpendicular dipole moment. We use both a BCS-theory approach that is most reliable at weak coupling and a strong-coupling approach that considers the two-body bound dimer states with one molecule in each layer as the relevant degree of freedom. The system ground state is a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of dimer bound states in the low-density limit and a paired superfluid (BCS) state in the high-density limit. At zero temperature, the intralayer repulsion is found to broaden the regime of BCS-BEC crossover and can potentially induce system collapse through the softening of roton excitations. The BCS theory and the strongly coupled ...

The influence of coal particles on self-ignition of methane–air mixture at temperatures 950–1200 K
J. Phys.: Conf. Ser., 2016
This paper represents experimental investigation of ignition of combustible gaseous mixture with reactive particles in the rapid compression machine at temperatures 950-1200 K and pressures 1.5-2.0 MPa. The experiments were carried out with stoichiometric methane-air mixture in the presence of coal particles with size 20-32 μm. It was found that the presence of these particles not only reduces ignition time but influences on the ignition temperature of mixture. It is ascertained that ignition time of methane in pure air is longer than with same mixture with addition coal dust. This difference is explained to preignition of methane near burning particles. It is shown that ignition of coal dust originates at the temperature of oxidant higher 850 K. Temperatur...

Racial differences in aldosterone excretion: a longitudinal study in children.
The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1993
Aldosterone production, estimated from urinary excretion of aldosterone and the plasma aldosterone level, was found in a previous cross-sectional study to be lower in black children than white children. The present study examined aldosterone excretion longitudinally to determine whether the aldosterone excretion rate changed with time and if the racial difference in aldosterone excretion persisted. Urine samples were collected every 6 months for up to 5.5 yr in 351 white and 170 black children for measurements of aldosterone, sodium (Na+), and potassium (K+) excretion. Results were expressed per mumol urinary creatinine. Mean values for excretion rates for the total longitudinal period were determined. Na+ excretion was not significantly different in the two...

Relatively high risk for hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis not responding to ursodeoxycholic acid
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, 2010
The reported incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) among patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) varies from 0.7-3.8%, whereas in cirrhotic patients the risk is considerably higher. Age, male sex, cirrhosis, and portal hypertension are reported risk factors. It has been suggested that ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) may protect against HCC. We aimed to define risk factors for the development of HCC at the time of PBC diagnosis and to identify, among patients treated with UDCA for a long term, a subgroup that could benefit from screening.Prospective multicenter cohort study of patients with established PBC treated with 13-15 mg/kg/day UDCA. Age, sex, antimitochondrial antibodies, bilirubin, albumin, alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, aspa...

High Temperature Fatigue Behavior of 23Cr26Ni Heat Resistant Steel
KEM, 2010
The influence of the cooling condition after solution treatment on the high temperature fatigue resistance of 23Cr-26Ni heat resistant steel was investigated. Two different cooling conditions were applied to the steel after solution treatment at 1230oC for 3 hours. One specimen was water quenched immediately after the solution treatment. The other one was furnace cooled at a rate of 0.5oC/min down to 750oC after the solution treatment. Then, both specimens were aged at 750oC for 5 hours. The low cycle fatigue (LCF) test was conducted to investigate the influence of high temperature on the LCF behaviors of the heat-resistant 23Cr26Ni alloy. Under two different heat treatment conditions, the LCF test was performed at total strain amplitudes ranging from ±0.4~...
